Description
China, 618-906. The elongated slender figure swaying gently and with long ribbons flowing around the body, the head crowned with a headdress, the left held beside the body and dangling a small vase and the right hand raised to the shoulder and holding a willow branch.
Provenance: From a German private collection.
Condition: Fine condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, encrustations, remnants of lacquer and gilt, losses, nicks, casting flaws. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina with scattered malachite and cuprite encrustations. The lotus base was added later, probably during the Ming or Qing dynasty, with associated traces of soldering.

The figure is standing on a circular pedestal raised on a lotus base dating from the Ming dynasty or earlier.
The end of the sixth century witnessed the manifestation of Guanyin, inspired by the Lotus Sutra. This type of Guanyin is shown either seated or standing and holding a spray of willow and a bottle containing sacred water that can cure all spiritual and physical illnesses.
