Description
China, 1644-1912. Ink, watercolors, and gouache on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll with a silk brocade frame. Finely painted with attendants and soldiers waiting by the stairs of a grand palace in the mountains, holding various celebratory paraphernalia like banners, lanterns, flags, and parasols, before beginning their march. A mischievous figure by the chariot strains his neck to eavesdrop on two soldiers, dressed in fine robes, as they engage in polite chatter.
Inscription: One seal to the bottom. One wax seal to the back.
Provenance: From a private collection in Zagreb, Croatia.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and browning of paper. Few stains, minor losses, creasing, folds, flaking, and minor foxing. Few minor touchups.
