Description
China, 618-906. Boldly modeled, the anthropomorphic guardian with a human head, the face with a stern expression, finely delineated features such as flared nostrils and bow-shaped lips, and painted details including a beard and mustache. The beast seated on its haunches with hooved feet on a short half-oblong base, the back with a spiked spine, covered overall in a thick amber-colored glaze.
Provenance: From an old French private estate.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, remnants of pigment, manufacturing flaws, small cracks and losses, old fills and repairs, minute chips to the base.
