Chapters XLIX - LV of this second volume discuss the missions among the infidels and work of the missionaries, including the missionaries of New California, describing in detail the native inhabitants of the region, the state of the missions there and the impressions that some domestic and foreign travelers have formed on them. He also reports on other topics concerning missionaries in New Spain, with notes on the history of the missions of Landa, Tilaco, Jalpan, Tlancoyol and Conca, founded in the region of the Sierra Gorda at the request of Archbishop Lorenzana. We could locate only 13 copies in OCLC, and it is scarce in commerce.Nueva California ('New California') among other names was a province of New Spain formally established in 1804. Following the Mexican War of Independence, it became a territory of Mexico in April 1822 and was renamed Alta California ("Upper California") in 1824. The territory included all of the U.S. states of California, Nevada, and Utah, and parts of Arizona, Wyoming, and Colorado. The territory was re-combined with Baja California (as a single departamento) in Mexico's 1836 Siete Leyes (Seven Laws) constitutional reform, granting it more autonomy.
