Item Details
Description
William Mohr California, Nebraska (1878 - 1955) Bridge in Winter oil on board Signed lower right. Exhibited: E. Patrick Gallery, MI Mohr, William Born: 1880? Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Died: 1950 - Ridley Park, Pennsylvania William Mohr was born in 1880, seemingly in the Philadelphia area as he is referred to in ?William Mohr of Philadelphia? in the earliest record of him I could find on October 6, 1915, in The Delaware County Times. Although I should note, I cannot find his birth certificate. He was a photographer and oil painter, father, scoutmaster, and active member of his church. He lived in Ridley Park, PA seemingly his entire adult life if not his entire life. His address was 512 Swarthmore Ave, Ridley Park, PA, however, the home there today does not seem to be the original. The first mention of his work was on November 22, 1915, in a Delaware County Times story about a Ridley Park Photography Show where he won the whole show and was given a collapsible tripod as a prize. He was also an active part of his church community acting as a secretary and music director for the Episcopal Church in Ridley Park. He led the choir in annual performances and plays as well as in minstrel shows. Mohr was also a scoutmaster for a local boy scout troop although not much more can be found about that. He exhibited in many local shows, such as one put on by the Carpenter?s League (verified to have participated in the 1948 and 49 shows) and showed work at local libraries like Ridley Library and Darby Library. He also won the Ridley Park Art Exhibition in 1948 and 49 for his oil paintings. Mohr also had work shown in at least one storefront on Edgemont Ave, Chester PA. He painted his local landscapes and parks using palette knives and had a very successful amateur career. William died in 1950 at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park at the age of 70 likely due to complications with a broken hip from a fall. Information on the artist came from the Curatorial Department of the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. 22 3/4"H x 26 1/2"W (frame), 19 1/4"H x 23 1/4"W (sight)
