The first use of painting for purely decorative purposes can be attributed to the Italians; examples of their earliest work still survive among the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Italian style is a very loose, painterly technique which is impressionistic and highly decorative. In the case of marble, for instance, the goal is to achieve the effect of a marble, rather than to precisely render its specific physical characteristics.

Structurally sound. Decoration probably original. General marks, nicks, scratches, cracks, rubbing and wear. Shrinkage cracks across tops. Rubbed losses to surface decoration overall. Scattered small losses to timber overall. Wear to legs.
