"MAP OF BUILDING LOTS FOR SALE IN THE VILLAGE OF PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY, 25 MILES FROM NEW YORK. APPLY TO W. BIRT, PLAINFIELD" The map showing lots roughly bounded by Peace St., 7th St., Union St., and 3rd St. Included is a location labeled "Free School". In 1848, Plainfield established one of the first free, open to all, tax-supported schools in the state. The railroad and the railroad depot are also indicated. The date 1854 is handwritten below the title. Many lots have "Sold" written in ink. There are calculations in pencil near the top margin. Verso with old (partial) label for PHILIP SWAIN PICTURE FRAMES AND ARTIST MATERIALS. Philip Swain's is said to be the oldest retail establishment in Plainfield. Losses, water stains, soiling. Frame, approx. 19 1/4" x 17 3/4". Provenance: the estate of John Long, highly regarded Virginia antiques dealer and collector.
