Description
c.1850-60 drawing in charcoal on paper coated with marble dust, three figures and a dog in a settlement of wooden buildings in winter, with a pump, wagon, and other details. Striking similarities to a mid-19th C. painting,, "Brooklyn in Winter", by Seymour Joseph Guy (1824-1910, born in England but lived in Brooklyn in the 1850s,) although from a somewhat different angle and with differences that may be artistic license, but may also be this artist's take on the same scene. Period lemon gold frame has some surface losses. Frame, approx. 21' x 16 1/4". Provenance: the estate of John Long, highly regarded Virginia antiques dealer and collector.
