Native American, Southeast or Midwest United States, Mississippian, ca. 900 to 1543 CE. A charming limestone carving of a stylized bird resting on stubby legs, slightly outstretched wings, and a crested head with shells inlaid as the eyes. There is the large receptacle drilled into the back and a smaller bored hole connecting to the main receptacle- perhaps for inserting a wood or reed stem for use as a pipe. Tobacco and other plants were ritualistically smoked from carved stone and pottery bowls. Size: 3.24" L x 3" W x 2.5" H (8.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 6.4 cm)
Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
