She was educated at home by her parents in languages, mathematics and history and took drawing lessons from Ebenzer Cook, before attending Sir Arthur Cope's School of Art in 1896. From 1901 she employed painting at the Royal Academy.
After the death of her parents in 1895 and 1904 respectively, Vanessa moved to the London neighborhood of Bloomsbury with her sister Virginia and her brothers Thoby (1880 - 1906) and Adrian (1883 - 1948). There he came into contact with artists, writers and intellectuals who formed the Bloomsbury Circle. Also in this context, she helped found El club de los fridays, an association made up especially of women who love art.
She married Clive Bell in 1907, with whom she had 2 children: Julian (who died in 1937 in the Spanish Civil War at the age of 29) and Quentin.[2]
They agreed to an open relationship, both having lovers throughout their life together. Vanessa Bell maintained relationships with the art critic Roger Fry, and with the bisexual painter Duncan Grant, from whom she had her daughter Angelica in 1918 and who her husband raised as his own daughter. For his part, Clive Bell maintained relationships with the writer Mary Hutchinson, among others.
Vanessa, Clive, Duncan Grant and Duncan's lover David Garnett moved to the country together just before the outbreak of World War I and met at Charleston Farmhouse near Firle in Sussex. There Bell and Grant painted and worked for the Omega Workshops company created by their friend Roger Fry.
