Harold Laynor (American, 1922-1991), Abstract Composition
oil on canvas, 1967, signed and dated at upper right, inscribed at verso of stretcher, presented in a wood frame.
Stretcher size 24 x 30 in.; Frame dimensions 31 1/2 x 37 1/2 in.
Harold Laynor was born in New York City and attended the Art Students League in Woodstock, NY, and the Pan American Art School. He graduated from Parsons School of Design, and earned B.S. and M.S. from New York University and a doctorate from The State University of New York at Albany. He served in the Second World War and, after being wounded, was sent to Paris to recover. During this time he studied under Picasso, who had great influence on his career.
Laynor was a Professor of Art Emeritus at Millersville University, Millersville, PA. He was an Associate in Art Education for the New York State Department and was also the Supervisor of Art for the Poughkeepsie School District in New York State. Laynor received the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Huntington Hartford Fellowship for painting.
