Known for: Barbizon style landscape painting
Biography: Jules Dupre (April 5, 1811-October 6, 1889), French painter, was one of the chief members of the Barbizon school of landscape painters. Dupre's color is sonorous and resonant; the subjects for which he showed marked preference are dramatic sunset effects and stormy skies and seas. Among his chief works are the Morning and Evening at the Louvre, and the early Crossing the Bridge in the Wallace Collection. The important works of art historians on the French landscape of the 19th century, and more particularly that of Olivier Meslay, have been able to attest to the fundamental influence of English painting on French landscape painters of the Romantic era. Jules Dupre was only thirteen years old during the pictorial earthquake that constituted the Salon of 1824 where the greatest English painters were invited to present their latest work. John Constable will then profoundly mark the French artistic scene and more precisely, he will germinate in the heart and mind of young Dupre a fierce desire for artistic emancipation whose cornerstone will be this infinite source of inspiration drawn from the masters English. He was only around twenty years old when he left for England in 1831. Across the Channel, he definitively forged his art, which he always wanted to build on the study and fascination of nature. . Our painting was created by the artist during his trip to England. If it is not, strictly speaking, a tribute to Constable, it is undoubtedly an explicit reference. This resolutely free and fiery touch which recalls that of the English master had undoubtedly never before been seen in a French landscape at that time. The great novelty, the great artistic emancipation of Dupre and of the French landscape following him therefore passed through England, making Jules Dupre and by analogy, our panel, the tutelary figure and work of the French landscape of the 19th century. The words of the historian and amateur Paul Mantz, a contemporary of the artist, confirm this: “These novelties, these boldnesses, these agitated skies where there were outbursts a la Constable caused the admiration of free artists”. The Barbizon School was therefore to be born across the Channel, which aroused the amused questioning of Olivier Meslay: "What Jules Dupre and his landscape friends invented, in imitation of Constable, is a French landscape. It is only strange that this French school was born while looking at an Englishman” (“Jules Dupre and English painting”, in “ L’Oise de Dupre a Vlaminck, Bateliers, Peintures et Canotiers”, Paris, 2007, p. 54). We thank Michel Rodrigue for confirming the authenticity of the painting, a certificate dated April 27, 2023 can be given to the buyer.
