Description
Agbagli Kossi (1935-1991) Togo. Untitled, circa 1980's, painted wood sculpture. Size: 49" x 11" x 19". Provenance: Purchased from Gert Chesi. Carvings of this size by Kossi are rarely available. Agbagli Kossi (1935-1991) Togo artist: created Vodou (Voodoo) figures in sculptural form, from doll to life size. Kossi's sculptures are reincarnations of traditional religious figures with mythic power and intense expression, as well as imaginary pieces in nontraditional pinks and whites. Most large work is embellished carved wood, painted with high gloss automobile paint. Publication "Voodoo: Kunst In Afrika" includes photos of Agbagli Kossi's altars and multiple sculptures, as well as Chuchuwu's Mami-Wata figures.ConditionIn good vintage condition. As photographed: natural wood splits on left and right arms where joined at shoulder. Repair to right foot.
