There are references to painting in Dylan's songs, highlighted by Alessandro Carrera, the Italian translator of all the artist's lyrics: the verses about Mona Lisa and ?the infinite that is judged inside museums? in Visions of Johanna from 1966: the American artist who wanders through Europe and has an appointment in Rome with a 'granddaughter of Botticelli' who promises to be close to him when he paints his masterpiece, in When I Paint My Masterpiece of 1971. In an incomplete piece recorded in February 1966, Positively Van Gogh?, there is a first testimony of the importance of painting in his poetics, which Carrera relates to the poem by Allen Ginsberg "Death in the ear of Van Gogh !" in which the poet of America asks that the painter's ear be considered legal tender!. Michelangelo is present in Jokerman, a 1983 song, while in Highlands, a 1997 song, the narrator finds himself in a Boston restaurant talking to an overbearing waitress who orders him to be portrayed by him: ?She is an artist, paint me a portrait!" and the narrator replies: "I would gladly do it, but I can't draw by heart".
Dylan's pictorial work, although available to the public since the sixties, has however begun to be known for its extension and quality only since 1994, with the publication of 92 black and white drawings made between 1989 and 1992, during his concert trips to America, Asia, and Europe. Dylan called this collection Drawn Blank, the archetype of all his subsequent works, which have authoritatively entered the international art circuit, with exhibitions in public and private venues.
