Description
**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved wooden sarcophagus mask used in most cases in place of a full wooden sarcophagus. The tapered conical form features a broad face - bearing large almond eyes, a prominent nose, and full lips - painted with white and black pigments on a ground of yellow-painted gesso. The broad headdress is decorated in red-brown pigment that was meant to imbue the stylized countenance of the deceased with a dignified presentation in the presence of gods in the afterlife. Size: 3.5" L x 8.625" W x 12" H (8.9 cm x 21.9 cm x 30.5 cm); 15.7" H (39.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Woodland Hills, California, USA collection, acquired from Prehistoric Journeys, June 26, 1993
