Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A wonderful marble portrait herm of Apollo with his hair arranged in 3 rows of coils at the top of his head, while long wavy tresses fall down to his shoulders, faming his idyllic visage. Crowned by a slender headband, the youthful deity gazes forth from generously-lidded eyes above a veristic nasal bridge and bow-shaped lips. This marble sculpture bears a slight resemblance the marble herm of a woman inscribed "Sappho" but believed to represent Ariadne in the Capitoline Museum in Rome. Size: 3.2" L x 4.75" W x 7.3" H (8.1 cm x 12.1 cm x 18.5 cm)
This piece has been published in the Royal Athena catalogs by J. Eisenberg: "Art of the Ancient World" Vol. XXI, 2010, no. 13 and Vol. XXVII, 2016, no. 15.
Provenance: ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York City, New York, USA; ex-Druout, Paris, France, May 2008; ex-French collection
