Description
17258vo; 160x90 mm. Legatura in piena pergamena. Titolo manoscritto al dorso. Tagli rossi. Risguardi marmorizzati. Pp. [24], 420. Fregio sul frontespizio. Iniziali e fregi xil. Leggere bruniture, buon esemplare.
Condition
8vo; 160x90 mm. Full vellum binding. Handwritten title on the spine. Red edges. Marbled endpapers. Pp. [24], 420. Ornaments on the title page. Woodcut initials and ornaments. Slight browning, good copy.
Beautiful edition of Machiavelli's “Discorsi”, a work that J.J. Rousseau considered it emblematic of Machiavellian philosophy. The work is dedicated to Zanobi Buondelmonti and Cosimo Rucellai, two of the greatest exponents of the Orti Oricellari in Florence, where young aristocrats gathered to discuss politics, art and literature. The “Discorsi” do not have a unitary structure, but already in the title they suggest the idea of a series of digressions conducted starting from a basic text. It is therefore not a real comment, but a series of reflections and notes that would like to constitute the foundations of a modern political theory based on the teachings of the history of ancient Rome.
