This hand-coloured engraving of a Red-billed Whidah or Vidua erythrorynchus is from William Swainson’s Birds of Western Africa from The Naturalist's Library series edited by Sir William Jardine, Bart. Published by WH Lizars of Edinburgh 1837.Jardine made natural history available to all levels of Victorian society by editing and issuing the hugely popular forty volumes of The Naturalist's Library (1833-1843).This work was published in two parts, being Volumes XI & XII of the Naturalist’s Library series.Size: 6.75in x 4.25in (17cm x 11cm).
