These hand-coloured engravings of the eggs of birds of prey are from the Coloured Illustrations of the Eggs of British Birds accompanied with descriptions of the Eggs and Nests by William C Hewitson, published by Jan Van Voorst, London, 1856.The prints show the eggs of:Griffon Vulture or Vultur Fulvus;Egyptian Vulture - Vultur Percnopterus;Golden Eagle or Aquila Chrysaëa;Golden Eagle and Sea Eagle or Haliæëus Albicilla.William Chapman Hewitson was a British naturalist, born on 9 January 1806 in Newcastle upon Tyne. A wealthy collector, Hewitson was particularly devoted to the Coleoptera and the Lepidoptera and also to bird's nests and eggs. He was also an accomplished scientific illustrator. Size: 8.25in x 5.25in (20cm x 12.5cm)
