Jay, the first chief justice of the United States and a signatory of the Treaty of Paris, married into the prominent New York Livingston family in 1774. On 28 April, Jay wed Sarah Livingston, the eldest daughter of the first New Jersey Governor and a signer of the U.S. Constitution, William Livingston.
