On p. 1 is a striking engraved illustration of jugate of Tilden and Hendricks. This newspaper has a ringing endorsement of the Democratic Presidential ticket (“The Democratic Centennial Candidates, Sam’l J. Tilden and Thos. A. Hendricks / For Congressman, Lafayette Lane.”). This election would become one of the most contentious in American history, eventually resulting in the presidency of the Republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893). Oregon would eventually award its electoral votes to Hayes.
