Andrew Johnson "Affix the Seal" to Post-War Pardon
Partially printed DS
A partially-printed document signed "Andrew Johnson" in which the President orders to affix the seal to a Presidential pardon. 1p, measuring 8.5" x 11", Washington, D.C., dated January 3, 1867. Within, Johnson directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to "a Warrant for the unconditional pardon of Albert C. Stanton". Exhibits uneven staining to more than three quarters of the document, not materially affecting text or signature; slight tearing present near folds, with surface indentation at top left. Otherwise, very good. Boldly signed.
Stanton was convicted in November 1864 for being in possession of counterfeit fractional currency, and sentenced to nearly four years in prison.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
