Doolittle's Raid was an air raid conducted on April 18, 1942 by the United States on the Japanese capital of Tokyo, among other places on mainland Japan. It would become the first such raid conducted by the U.S. military in retaliation against the attack on Pearl Harbor. While the raid caused comparatively minor damage, it proved to have major psychological consequences on both sides. For the Americans, it served as a much-needed morale booster. For the Japanese, however, it lead to fears about the ability of military leaders to defend the home islands. For his service as the mission's leader, Doolittle was ultimately awarded with a Medal of Honor and received a promotion to brigadier general.
