Benjamin Franklin Three 19th/20th C. Engravings
Engraving
A collection of three handsome 19th/20th C. engravings featuring Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), Founding Father and American statesman. Expected toning and weathering, else near fine. The smallest engraving measures 4.125" x 5.625" while the largest engraving measures 7.375" x 10.125."
In more detail, these items include:
1. A bust portrait engraving of Franklin after J.A. Duplessis and W.J. Edwards. Franklin's portrait, which underscores his very "American" style of dress - with unpowdered hair and fur-trimmed collar - is surrounded by two vignettes, the top one depicting Republican virtue assisting an angel to engrave Franklin's name in the record books; and the bottom one depicting the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The engraving also includes Franklin's facsimile signature, and is entitled "Provincial G.: Master of the Province of Pennsylvania, 1734." With isolated darkened/toned edges, and a wrinkled upper right corner, else very good to near fine. 7.375" x 10.125."
2. An engraving after O. Pelton showing ten portrait roundels of famous American, British, French, and Italian notables from the 15th through the 19th centuries including Benjamin Franklin; Queen Victoria I; George Washington; Napoleon Bonaparte; Henry Clay; William Shakespeare; Thomas Jefferson; Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette; Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington; and Christopher Columbus. Minor fading and wrinkling along the left edge. Slightly mat burned verso. Else near fine. 5.5" x 8.25."
3. A closely cropped bust portrait engraving of Franklin after H.B. Hall. Copyright information, title, and attributive description, "From the Portrait in Almon's Intelligencer London 1777 / Engraved from the Original Picture by Jno. Lodge" appears below. Trimmed to an overall size of 4.125" x 5.625."
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
