A collection of five newspapers from the Civil War and Spanish-American War era, published between 1855 and 1899. Three issues are Civil War dated. Issues from "The New York Times", "The World" and "Saturday Globe", all measure approximately 15" x 21.5" except for the "Saturday Globe", which is larger and measures 17" x 22.5". The newspapers have varying degrees of folds and creasing, toning, chipping, separations, soiling, toning, etc. Please refer to the photographs for condition information.

The issues include reports of pre-war tension, Civil War news and legislation, speeches and published letters, reports on the hostilities with Cuba, and much more. These newspapers offer a fantastic perspective on the mindset of the country during the lead-up to the war, the years during the Civil War, and the years that followed.

Includes the following:
1. October 10, 1855. "New York Daily Times", Volume V, No. 1267. With articles on Kansas-Missouri violence, General Jefferson Davis at West Point, the enforcement of the Monroe Doctrine, and a British book published by Miss Amelia Matilda Murray which disputed the claims about slavery in Uncle Tom's Cabin.
2. January 8, 1862. "New York Times", Volume XI, No. 3212. With articles on war expenses, taxation, legislation, and battle news. Petitions in Congress for the emancipation of slavery and the exchange of prisoners.
3. January 20, 1862. "New York Times", Volume XI, No. 3222. With articles on disloyalty among government employees and instances of treason, along with signs of dissatisfaction with Jefferson Davis's government in the Confederacy.
4. October 1, 1863. "The World", Volume III, No. 1027. With news from the battlefields of Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga, as well as reports of a new loan for the Confederates being talked of in Paris.
5. January 7, 1899. "Saturday Globe", Volume XVIII, No. 34. With articles on bad blood remaining between Cuba and Spain, Europe's concerns about war, and the discovery of a new dinosaur skeleton in Wyoming.
