Description
Civil War
Forestdale, RI, ca. 1862
Mansfield & Lamb 1862 Calvary Saber and Scabbard
Other
An 1862 calvary saber produced by notable manufacturer Mansfield and Lamb of Forrestdale, Rhode Island. Featuring a beautifully formed brass hilt, with tight black leather grip. The ricasso is marked: ?Mansfield & Lamb/ Forrestdale RI? on one side, and on the other ?U.S./GGS/1862?, corresponding to the manufacturer inspector's initials. The scabbard is of usual design, complete with suspension rings. Exhibits light brass patina and expected weathering to blade, with scattered tarnishing throughout. Light denting to scabbard and minor imperfections to blade edge. From end to end, the saber measures 42.5" while the accompanying scabbard measures 36". Overall, very good.
This is a less commonly found 1862-dated model; Mansfield & Lamb would supply approximately 10,408 sabers in 1861 and 1862, and almost three times that from 1863 to 1865. As a result, this particular model would have been early enough for service in most major battles. The company ran the factory town of Forrestdale, RI, with a cotton mill and scythe factory, the latter making the production of cavalry sabers easier than for most contractors. They produced all their own parts and focused on their military contracts for enlisted sabers rather than officer?s sabers and other distractions.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
