Description
Trinitite
New Mexico, July 16, 1945
Jar of Trinitite from the Trinity Test
Jar of trinitite from the Trinity Test on July 16, 1945, the first detonation of a nuclear weapon, and the only such test before the bombing of Hiroshima which occurred three weeks later. Collected after the explosion by an eyewitness, the jar contains hundreds of pieces ranging in size from 1 x 1 x 1 mm to 26 x 17 x 3 mm. As the atomic energy released by the Trinity bomb was low, comprising a few dozen kilograms of uranium, trinitite is considered safe to handle. Jar measures 3.5'' x 2.75''. Ex-Sotheby's.
Trinitite has a glassy surface, usually found in shades of green, formed by the atomic blast melting the sand found at the test site near Alamogordo, New Mexico. Most of the trinitite at the site was bulldozed away, making collections such as this relatively rare.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
