Signed book
A signed Russian edition of "Voyages and Returns: Selected Poems" by Pablo Neruda. Moscow: Publishing House "Progress", 1964. Russian printing. Small twelvemo, 399pp. Translated from Spanish by M. Aliger and O. Savich. Signed on the front free end page by "Pablo Neruda", dated 1967 with additional untranslated text, and sketches of a heart and a flower. White cloth-covered boards with gilt titling over black on the front cover and at the spine. No dustjacket present. Light shelf wear with bumped corners and minor soiling. Sound binding and clean internal pages. Boldly signed.
Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) was a Chilean poet-diplomat and politician. He began his career in poetry at the age of 13 and wrote in a variety of styles, including surrealist poems, historical epics, political manifestos, and passionate love poems. On March 4, 1945, he was elected as a senator for the Chilean Communist Party and served one term. When President Gabriel Gonz?lez Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, a warrant was issued for Neruda's arrest. Friends hid him for months and in 1949 he escaped through a mountain pass near Maihue Lake into Argentina and would not return to Chile for three years. Neruda would later go on to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971.
