A brief letter on monogrammed letterhead from William M. "Boss" Tweed (1823-1878) to lawyer and State Committee member Peter Cagger (1814-1868). 1p of a bifolium, measuring 4.5" x 5.375", Albany, New York, dated February 6, 1868. Signed at conclusion as "Wm. Tweed". Moderate wear throughout, including uneven toning and darkened staining along lower margin, with additional indentation and soiling from paperclip at top left. Evidence of prior mounting to all corners with residue verso. Good to fair overall, written just one month after Tweed was elected to the New York State Senate.

In full: "Did you see those folks yesterday and what was the result, I think you should see Woods[?] as it is necessary that we should know where we are- Can you drop in this [illegible]."

William Magear Tweed was an American politician most known for being the political boss of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party's political machine that played a major role in the politics of 19th-century New York.?His notorious downfall began in 1871 when the Manhattan Orange Riots, led by Irish laborers, exposed weaknesses in the Tweed Ring's influence and? Harper's Weekly cartoonist Thomas Nast turned up the heat in his anti-Tweed campaign. He was later convicted of stealing an amount estimated in 1877 at being between $25 million and $45 million from New York City taxpayers, although other estimates have ranged as high as $200 million.
