Ticket/Invitation
A full admission ticket to the 1892 World Heavyweight Championship match between titleholder John L. Sullivan and challenger James J. Corbett, held at the famed Olympic Club in New Orleans. Measuring 4.25" x 3.25", New Orleans, Louisiana, dated [Wednesday] September 7, 1892. At 9:00 pm that night, the venue filled to its 10,000-person capacity in order to view the bout which would usher in a new era of boxing, in spite of a hefty ticket price of as much as $15. PSA slabbed and graded VG, measuring 4.25" x 7.25" overall.
On September 7, 1892, World Heavyweight Campion John L. Sullivan (1858-1918) attempted his final title defense against James "Gentleman Jim" Corbett (1866-1933). It was the first Heavyweight Championship to be fought with gloves, thus closing the door on the bare-knuckle era. The youthful Corbett was a skillful boxer and entered the ring in top condition. Sullivan, on the other hand, hadn't fought in the past three years and was known for his heavy drinking. Corbett notably danced around the ring and dodged Sullivan's advances, eventually winning by knockout in the twenty-first round.
