The work was recently uncovered in an upsate New York collection. It was seated in it's frame upside down so the signature was not readily apparent. The photos show the painting in it's proper orientation with the signature at lower right. While faded it is perfectly clear upon close examination. This work corresponds with a series of small mixed media works WOLS did in the 1940s in France. They are extremely desireable to collectors achieving prices in excess of $200,000 for works of similar size and subject. This one compares favorably to any I've been able to find. It is mind boggling the amount of detail in such a small painting. When found the painting was sealed in the frame by the period backing (See last photo). I did remove it to see if there was any additional information, which there was not. WOLS did not gain fame as an artist during his lifetime. He came to prominance in the 1960s-80s when he was rediscovered. The shadow box frame style, float mounting, and deckled paper edge, is consistant with the exhibitions done on WOLS during that time period.
