TYPE:Art SUB TYPE:Painting REGION:United States SUB REGION:Southern MEDIUM:Watercolor SGD/UNS:Signed DATE OF WORK:C 1900s-10s CATALOG NOTES:An excellent circa 1920s original watercolor on artist board depicting two figures poling a group of logs through a Southern swamp with hanging Spanish Moss. The painting is signed at lower left 'Johnson' with two sets of illegible initials underneath. Possibly an early work by William Henry Johnson. On the signature on this painting, the S is continued down lower than the other letters. This is very unusual, but it is something WH Johnson does in almost every signature I can find. While it is known that Johnson spent the first years of artistic training in NYC starting in 1918 at the age of 17, and that he enrolled at at the National Academy of Design in 1921. there are no examples that I can find of anything from this period. Almost all of Johnson's known works are from the late 1920s after he moved to Denmark, through his later more primitive style when he returned to the US. This board has a partial mark on reverse from the Kolesch Co in NYC. This stamp can be dated to the late 1910s - early 1920s consistant with WH Johnson's time in NYC. The last photo included in this listing shows another work of art I found online with the same marking that was definitely executed in 1919.
