Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st century CE. A larger-than-life marble head of an emperor, likely Vespasian, the founder of the Flavian dynasty, displaying a round face with wide, heavy-lidded eyes and full cheeks, all crowned by a densely coiled coiffure. The Flavian dynasty ruled the Roman Empire between 69 and 96 CE, encompassing the reigns of Vespasian, and his 2 sons Titus and Domitian. This period is called the "Year of the Four Emperors." With Emperors Galba and Otho dying in rapid succession and Emperor Vitellius losing his position to Commander Vespasian, thus began the Flavian dynasty with Emperor Vespasian followed by his 2 sons 79 to 81 and Domitian 81 to 96 (his assassination). Vespasian ruled for 10 years and is credited for rebuilding Rome (after the civil war that preceded him) financial reform and began the construction of the Flavian Amphitheater which Titus completed and now referred to as The Colosseum. Size: 9.7" L x 8.8" W x 11.5" H (24.6 cm x 22.4 cm x 29.2 cm); 17.25" H (43.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Flavian's bust can be seen on gold aurei and in the countless busts and art through history, always with a full round face. This bust is consistent with that representation and exudes strength and resolve.
