Hill (c. 1886-1969)He was an artist of unusual natural talent being, for the most part, self taught although he did study briefly at Boston University. He also was fortunate in having been a student of Lester Stevens, ANA whose methods and direction Hill regarded as a gospel of painting. As a disciple of Stevens, he painted mainly outdoors, working for three hours at a stretch which is as long as light anywhere remains the same. He painted New England landscapes.Mr. Hill belonged to the Boston Art Club and the Newburyport Art Association. He was a widely known Newburyport artist residing in Newbury, MA.Born in Wintersport, Maine and a 1904 graduate of Wintersport High School and University of Maine, class of 1908, he had seafaring ancestors and a background of personal experience at sea. Therefore, his favorite subjects were marine paintings in oil and watercolor. The Newburyport High School Class of 1950 commissioned Hill to paint the city's famous clipper ship, The Dreadnaught. His paintings of the Revolutionary War frigate Alliance are found throughout the country. He painted a likeness of the Anna Schmidt which was built in Newburyport and captured and burned by the Alabama in 1863. William Hill passed away in Newburyport, MA on March, 21, 1969 at the age of 83 and was buried in North Hampton, NH.Look for signature Wm A Hill on his works.
