Item Details
Description
Raphael (Italian, 1483-1520). "Venus, Eros, and Athena," (Marcantonio Raimondi (Italian, c. 1480-1527) or His School, (Raimondi was the premier engraver of Raphael's drawings). (From Hermann Goring's private collection at Bergfhof). Antique Copper plate engraving on laid paper executed by master engraver Amand Durand (1831-1905). Year: 1876. Image Size C. 5 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches. Framed dimensions c. 16 x 19 inches. The unframed pictures are direct scans of the print. This work has been professionally framed in a new modern moulding. This master print also has Amand Durand's stamp on the reverse which can be referenced by Lugt. 2934. Most of the original Durand prints from the 1800's do not have the Lugt stamp on the reverse which makes this a rarity, and the provenance makes this item unique. This print came from a collection of prints that were removed from the private collection of Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring in "Berghof" in the area of Berchtesgaden. The collection of prints were mounted into fine albums and were liberated May 4, 1945 by the second armored division commanded by General Leclerc, which captured the compound "Deuxième Division Blindee G. 5". The front blank of each album was stamped "Cette piece provident des collections personnelles d'Hermann GOERING au Berghof, [Berchtesgaden] 4-5-1945..." (This piece is from the personal collection of Hermann Goering at Berhof, 4-5-1945) and below this "for authentication" and the stamp of the division "Deuxième Division Blindee G. 5.” Each print also had a small card mounted underneath which described the image, reference number and the collection where original image for the print came from. Herman Goering's collection has been the subject of much research, books (Le Front de l'art by Rose Valland) and even films (Monuments Men). A commission was charged to return the works of art stolen by Georing all over Europe (much of it came from France). In 1953, in France, a State sponsored sale resold the works of art from the collection of Hermann Goering, for which no owners or provenance have been found. Winning bidder will receive the framed print, a photo certificate of the authentication stamp, the original mounted description card, and a gallery certificate of authenticity showing both the front of the print and the Durand stamp on the reverse. Hermann Wilhelm Göring (January 12, 1893 - October 15, 1946), was one of the heads of the Nazi regime, commander of the "Luftwaffe" (the aerial warfare branch of the Wehrmacht) and the German air force. A Nazi war-criminal (the most senior Nazi arrested alive when the war ended), who was sentenced to death in the Nuremberg trials but committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide pill prior to his execution. Göring was known for his extravagant way of life which included looting art treasures throughout occupied Europe, for his private collections and for decorating his mansions. Berghof is the name given to the private home of Adolf Hitler in the Nazi compound in Obersalzberg, near the Bavarian town Berchtesgaden. The Nazi regime expropriated the area for its needs and established at its foot a big military camp as well as entertainment and vacation homes for the use of the Nazi Party elite when they visited. In the area, named Führersperrgebiet (Führer Compound) some elegant mansions were built for Hitler's closest associates - Herman Göring, Albert Speer and Martin Boemann, as well as a teahouse and a very high lookout, the "Eagle's Nest." This artwork is accompanied by a Gallery Certificate of Authenticity and is Guaranteed as described.
