When the Second Boer War broke out, her parents returned to Germany where they lived until 1920. It was in Germany that Irma Stern studied art at the Weimar Academy, then at the Levin-Funcke studio, and finally starting in 1917 with Max Pechstein.
Stern then became associated with the German Expressionist movement, holding his first exhibition in Berlin in 1919.
In 1920 , he returned to his homeland and held his first exhibition of modern art in Cape Town in 1922 . After a brief return to Germany, he settled permanently in Cape Town, South Africa, beginning in 1926.
However, he spends part of his life traveling notably to Madeira, Senegal, Zanzibar, the Belgian Congo, Swaziland, Spain and France.
Stern paints many landscapes and the people he meets. She is one of the first contemporary South African artists to incorporate black South Africans into her paintings.
In 1962, a major retrospective was dedicated to him in London.
He died in Cape Town on August 23, 1966.
Her work was the subject of major retrospectives in 1968, and in 1971, the Irma Stern Museum opened in her home in the Rosebank district. Some of his paintings are on display in the permanent collections of the Africana Museum, Ann Bryant Art Gallery, Durban Art Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery, King George VI Art Gallery, Pretoria Art Museum, the Tatham Art Gallery and at the William Humphreys Art Gallery.
