The band achieved success at the same time as Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax and was an important part in the development of the US groove metal subgenre.Pantera played for over nine years before achieving real commercial success with the album Cowboys From Hell. They subsequently became one of the most acclaimed bands of the 1990s and have often been cited as one of the most influential bands ever in the genre. Despite the band's great success, they suffered from conflicts and problems between the band members, which led to the breakup of the band in 2003. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed in 2004 while playing in his later band Damageplan. Pantera has sold around 14 million records worldwide.
