Richard A. Johnson's work is described as Abstract Illusionism with its three-dimensional layers. In the drawing "Cotton and Lace II", Johnson looks to the south's historical past by merging the images of raw cotton bolls still on their stem with delicate lace often used for clothes.
After an extensive teaching career, Johnson retired from the Department of Fine Arts at the University of New Orleans.
