Leonard W. Volk Plaster Bust of Abraham Lincoln
The Leonard W. Volk Plaster Bust of Abraham Lincoln is a remarkable 19th-century piece of art. Crafted from white plaster, the bust depicts Abraham Lincoln in a style reminiscent of ancient Rome, wearing drapery, and featuring a clean-shaven face. It was expertly created by American sculptor Leonard W. Volk (1828 - 1895) and is mounted on a turned pedestal base.
Notably, in 1860, Abraham Lincoln visited Volk’s studio to create a life-mask, which was used as a reference for this bust. This particular mask cast is one of only two taken of Lincoln, with the second completed in 1865 by Clark Mills. Leonard W. Volk, who had studied in Rome, played a significant role in the artistic scene of the United States and even helped establish the Chicago Academy of Design in 1867.
The fact that this piece is signed adds to its historical and artistic significance, making it a valuable and collectible representation of Abraham Lincoln’s likeness and the work of an accomplished sculptor from that era.
