one mahogany, with rush seat, stamped to the seat rail 2004, 76.5cm wide, 100cm high, 78cm deep; the other mahogany with ebony inlaid initials HIP to back, rush seat, 70.5cm wide, 97.5cm high, 83cm deep (2)
Literature: Agius P. British Furniture 1880 -1915 p. 104 for an example by Simpson, Kendal.Note: This Studio armchair and its near pair with the initials HIP inlaid in ebony on the back, is close to a design by Arthur Simpson, exhibited in the 1896 Arts and Crafts Exhibition. The chair with the inlaid initials was bought in Bearnes, Torquay on 3rd October 1990 for £800.
