Notes & Literature: Frank C. Pape. He was an English artist and book illustrator who was born on July 4, 1878, in London, United Kingdom. He studied at The Slade School of Fine Art, completing his studies c. 1902–04. Papé was married to a fellow Slade student, illustrator Agnes Stringer.

By 1911, Papé was a highly successful book illustrator. His work was characterized by its clear lines, bold colors, and sense of humor. He illustrated a wide range of books, including children's books, novels, and works of non-fiction. Some of his most famous works include the illustrations for "The Russian Story Book" (1916), "The Cream of the Jest" (1917), and "The Wind in the Willows" (1927).

World War I brought a decline in Britain's illustrated book market, affecting Papé's livelihood. He enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps in 1915 and served on the Greco-Bulgarian front. After the war, he returned to illustrating, but his work was never as popular as it had been before the war.

Papé continued to illustrate until his death in 1972. He is considered one of the most important British book illustrators of the 20th century. His work is characterized by its wit, its visual appeal, and its timeless quality.
