Executed in 1983, Untitled #121 belongs to Cindy Sherman's 1983 fashion photographs commissioned by Dianne Benson for Interview magazine. In this series, Sherman both parodied and dismantled cultural stereotypes of the female body. Sherman explained, 'I really started to make fun, not of the clothes, but much more of the fashion. I was starting to put scar tissue on my face to become really ugly.' (Quoted in Sandy Nairne, The State of Affairs. Ideas and Images in the 1980s (London, 1987) p. 136).

Another print from this edition is in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. (98.19).

This photograph is in generally very good condition. Although the tones are deep and saturated, the overall coloration has shifted toward magenta. When viewed in high raking light, the following can be seen: some scattered handling creases, mostly in the middle section of the print; and small, scattered deposits of original retouching. When viewed outside of its window mat, a thin band at the extreme edges of the image has shifted color, most likely from contact with the window mat.

The margins have warmed and there are some very minor, scattered handling creases. On the reverse of the sheet, there are three areas of adhesive remnants near the upper edge. Sold framed.
