Item Details
Description
Manufactured in 1861 in classic Civil War martial form with 8" round barrel, German silver blade front sight, New York address, rebated cylinder, and frame cut for shoulder stock with matching steel backstrap. Brass trigger guard marked on the left "US", attributed to a postwar rebuild marking for Indian Wars period reissue. 1-piece oiled walnut grips bear a faint cartouche on the left and clear "IH(?) CO D VT / JCH" stamping on the underside. A Justin G. Hinds (also sometimes listed as "Judson" and sometimes with the middle initial "C") is listed among the rolls of Company D of the 1st vermond Cavalry. Hailing from Hannover, New Hampshire he enlisted July 29, 1864 at Windsor, Vermont. On October 7, 1864 he was captured at Columbia Furnace and died as a prisoner of war on November 16 at Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. A large binder of research, scans of original documents relating to Hinds' service, and a period cabinet card photo of a soldier, presumably Hinds, accompany this lot. Lot also includes a martial style black leather flap holster, H.A. Bingee cartridge box, and packet of Symns combustible envelope cartridges. CONDITION: Very good overall. Steel components display a dove gray patina throughout. Front strap exhibits a golden patina, cleaned at some point, and now starting to mellow. Grips are very fine with a few scattered marks. Strong black powder abraded bore. Crisp mechanics. Cylinder arbor is period repaired. Wedge is a replacement, other numbers matching. Holster has some surface cracking and a split at the belt loop but is otherwise very good, even retaining the often missing toe plug. Cartridge box is very nice with supple leather. Cartridge packet is likewise fine. Accessories: Holster, cartridge box, and cartridges Barrel Length: 8" Caliber/Bore: .44 Rifled FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1860 Army Paperwork: Research Serial Number: 10895
