Print of a drawing by British artist Harry Fenn of The Hotel Del Monte and Grounds in Monterey, California. Print measures 12"x 16". There is some foxing and small tears, but the print is still very suitable for matting and framing. Born in England in 1845, Fenn first trained as a wood engraver before embarking on a career as a painter and print maker. In the mid-1860s, Fenn came to the United States to visit Niagara Falls and ended up staying for six years. He left to pursue further art studies in Italy, but returned to the U.S. to illustrate his first book, [x=#8220/]Snow Bound,[x=#8221/] written by John Greenleaf Whittier. The success of this first illustration project lead to more work and Fenn[x=#8217/]s second book, [x=#8220/]Ballads of New England.[x=#8221/] These two books were the first illustrated gift books of their kind in the United States.
