Description
Two-handled, fine bone china loving cup commemorating the 1937 coronation of H.M. King George VI and H.M. Queen Elizabeth. Hallmark on the bottom is for Royal Crown Derby, a producer of fine bone china dating back to 1750 and supplier of such items to every British monarch since 1761. The cup bears an ornately gilded design from the foot to the rim and includes a gilded laurel wreath pattern just below the inside rim. One side has two circular portraits, about an inch in diameter, one of each royal. These are surrounded by gilt wreaths incorporating the words // MAY / CORONATION / 1937 //. The other side is similar in design, except the portraits are replaced with an intertwined G and R (for George Rex) and E and R (for Elizabeth Regina). The fine bone china reveals a warm translucent glow when held up to a light. Approx 4.5 inches tall, 4.25 inches rim-to-rim, and 6 inches handle-to-handle. The foot is just shy of 3 inches in diameter. This piece is in excellent condition with no flaking or worn spots in the gilding, and no scratches or cracks in the china. A beautiful display piece.
