Description
Designed by Jules Edouard Roine (1857-1916) for Jos. K. Davison's Sons of Philadelphia, this 8 1/2 inch diameter galvano bears a young woman seated at a lathe, measuring a die. Around the top "Dies"; symbol; "And"; symbol; "Medals". In exergue Jos. K. Davisons Sons / Phila PA; signed J. E. Roine.Roine was a partner with Henri Weil, who founded the Medallic Art Co. of New York. Weil had try to buy the Deitsch Brothers business, but when they failed to make an agreement, Deitsch sold all the dies Weil and Roine had produced to Davison's of Philadelphia, a rival company. The partnership continued until 1915, when Roine became ill and returned to Paris. In 1910 both RoinÈ and Victor David Brenner exhibited their galvanic creations in the International Exhibition of Contemporary Medals held at the American Numismatic Society.
