Description
Mural Study, watercolor on paper, 6 x 12, signed lower right: Emile Guidroz, Guidroz is known primarily for his landscapes and figural works, working in Texas and his native Louisiana for his entire career. After attending Texas Christian University, Guidroz studied at the Dallas Art Institute with Kathryne and Olin Travis. He continued to take classes at the Art Students League in New York City, and earned his fine art degree with honorable mention from the Art Institute of Chicago. He returned to the Dallas/Fort Worth area after completing his formal education, and would remain there until his death in 2006. Mural painting was popularized as part of public works programs in the 1930s. Guidroz worked on a number of mural commissions, including assisting Perry Nichols (1911-1992) of the Dallas Nine on the Dallas Morning News building mural. This unusual sketch depicts mythological or fantastical subject matter, likely lending itself to an allegorical narrative.
