Description
Bluebonnets, oil on board, 16 x 20, signed lower right: Virginia Leberman, Leberman was born in Austin, and is known today as a painter, photographer, and writer. A period of convalescence at home propelled her into painting in her late 30s, after which she would pursue serious training. She studied under Samuel Gideon (1875-1945), attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and spent summers in Taos, New Mexico, throughout the 1930s and early-1940s, painting alongside Alexander Hogue (1898-1994) and Xavier Gonzalez (1898-1993). During the mid-1940s, Leberman moved to Elizabethtown, New York, where she continued private tutelage and refined her photography skills. Her photographic portraits of prominent public figures, such as Eleanor Roosevelt, are celebrated today. Her richly saturated and textural landscape aligns with the impressionistic Texas tradition of bluebonnet paintings.
