Still Life, watercolor on paper, 20 x 14, signed lower right: A N Day, Primarily a watercolorist, Day’s body of work is largely comprised of landscapes and still life scenes with a modern sensibility. Day’s use of bright pigments and unmasked brushstrokes position her floral compositions firmly in the modernist canon. The patterning of the ceramic vessel and various surfaces surrounding the flowers is reminiscent of Southwest culture. Day trained at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Art Students League of New York, and at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Day relocated to Houston in 1930, and taught in the public school system for over twenty years. Day exhibited regularly in state and regional shows, remaining in Houston until her death.
