Description
The handsome salt glazed stoneware storage jar is found with its original lid/cover and is stamped with the mark of J. M. Hummel Florence Morgan County MO.
According to Missouri historian Charles Van Ravensway, John M Hummel, who first started his pottery about 2 miles south of Florence, Missouri, continued in operation until about 1892, after which he has said to have ceased potting because of outside competition, and turned to winemaking. At its height, the pottery employed as many as 20 men at four kick wheels turning pottery wares. Production included jugs, jars, crocks, pitchers, drainage, tiles, and square floor tiles.
